I started the project by looking at first principles, studying how we now use taps, the interaction and how they operate, the mechanics and geometry.
Starting a design is fun, playful. It is a conversation you are having with yourself bouncing ideas between sketches and your eye. You never know where it will lead.
From the very start the idea of a lever that felt good and correct in the hand came to mind. It also had a reference to the original single lever taps and the old hand water pump, which gave the concept a traditional and familiar feel.
The first sketches were just a thick line crossing a circle. The line was the lever, the bar that operated the tap. Lift to open and move side to side for temperature. It looked very pure and simple, it looked perfect and I could see that it would work perfectly. I love the crisp geometric aesthetic coupled with the refined rounded edges.
